Close Up & Far Out

Things I like: books, iPhones, palm trees. All of that goes down in these shots from CLOSEUPANDFAROUT. A little iPhonography never hurt anyone.

This LA 'These Friends' Show

For THIS LA's first gallery show, they wanted to put up a buncha work from their friends. Looks like we have some mutual ones: Estevan Oriol, Michael Seiben, Shepard Fairey, & Sage Vaughn. The list of artists for this show reminds me just how many people are making cool stuff. Opening night is 2/12/10. Bonus-Here's a video from THIS featuring Jeff Caudill. You can download one of his EPs for free HERE.

Chuck Palahniuk's Guts Vans

Mike McComb posted a custom pair of custom Vans that his girlfriend made on Palahniuk's message forum. If you're familiar with the author, you know its gotta be good. Remember the story in Haunted called 'Guts' when the guy is letting you in on a secret from childhood? The reason why he is super thin & has one really short intestine? I'll stop there. YOU GOTTA READ IT. (Oddly, the first time I heard the story it was being read aloud to me and friends by Peter Line at about 3am several years ago. Now that's how you end a night of partying.)

Skull-A-Day Custom Vans

Marissa M. sent this link to me. The site's about- you guessed it- a different kind of skull each day. There isn't much in the way of details about Mikee, the guy who made these custom Vans originally posted on SKULL-A-DAY. But hey, you can't read that well anyway. Look at this photo.

Konstantin Sergeyev's Photos Will Punch You

Photographer Konstantin Sergeyev has been making himself (and readers of New York Magazine, Vice, Chief Mag, & many others) happy by taking photos of punk shows in & around NYC for coming up on ten years. Lucky us that he sent over this photo of a GUIGNOL show in December at Shea Stadium in Brooklyn. More about Konstantin:

"ok lets see.. i was born in odessa, ukraine but came to brooklyn, new york with my family when i was just hitting my teens. discovered punk rock a couple of years later and took a photo class in high school at the same time - turned out my teacher used to take photos at hardcore shows in the early 80s, shooting mdc, minor threat, black flag, etc. so i started shooting shows as well. this march it'll be 10 years since i shot my first show. i still shoot mainly smaller local shows in new york, and have been lucky enough to document some of my favorite bands on tour...coming up on feb 6 i'll be showing some of my work at an event called "hardcore punktuation" at the hub city art space in new brunswick, nj. its a "diy group art exhibition featuring nyc & nj punk artists" and besides visual art there will also be spoken word and acoustic sets. "

To see more of Konstantin's work please have a look at KONSTPHOTO. Also I strongly suggest checking out HIS FLICKR PAGE. He's shot everyone from Vivian Girls to The Pogues. If you're near/in New Bruswick, NJ here's the flyer for the upcoming show he was speaking about.

Everyone Should Have Their Own Love Song

Brian Philips sent us a love song. Usually, when one is in love one could be shy about an amorous public declaration of true feeling. Rejection? Embarrassment? Heartbreak? Not this time. Brian, Vans...Vans...loves you, too! There! We said it.

Here's a bit more about Brian:

"I am a freshman in college. I major in Physical Education. I live in Lawton, OK. I work at Laugh Out Loud, its a family fun place. Where kids come and play and stuff. I started music at 14. I am in love with it, its a passion to me. If I could I would do it full time. I love making songs, I love music."

Contact BRIAN ON FACEBOOK and hear more of his music ON YOUTUBE.

New Year's Project-A Photo a Day

Sam Vaughan has a great project for himself for 2010. He's taking one photo each day & adding it to THIS SET on FLICKR. Day one started with an introductory self portrait. Look what popped up on day two? Nice shot of the old Vans vs the new. There comes a time when they are falling apart & you need new ones, but I do have a penchant for the shredded ones. Sam's on day eight. Hope he keeps it up.
