DIY Cardboard Vans

Yesterday an extremely enthusiastic kid messaged me on twitter to show me a project he was working on. As it happens, he's resourceful and made something cool. I got a kick out of his email...

"Hello Nikki Scoggins, my name is Chaun Collins. I am 17 years old. I currently live in Newark, Delaware. I like making designs for shirts, like graphic tees sneakers etc. I am currently trying to start my own clothing line but I love VANS sneakers. I was trying to create my own shoe designs and hoped that someone out there would like them and help me make them so I sent my sneaker to you guys. I couldn't figure out an easy way to make the sneakers so I searched and searched for easy ways to make a sneaker. While searching I stumbled upon some work by artist MIKE LEAVITT and he designed his shoes out of cardboard. This seemed like a very low budget way of making model sneakers. It inspired me to make a pair of my own; so I did. It takes me around and hour to make both shoes. The materials I used are, a hot glue gun, VANS shoe boxes, staples and a stapler."

Right on. Chaun is requesting feedback to HIS TWITTER. Here are Mike Leavitt's cardboard Vans, too. Make sure to check out his sculptures on MIKE LEAVITT's SITE.

How to Prove to Your Kids that You Were Cool

Last summer Cole Hammer met TONY ALVA & ANDREW ALLEN in Lakewood Park, CA. He's not going to remember, but when he's older this will prove that his mom is cool. Marian, keep the evidence. (Thanks for the photos, miss.)

Since I'm taking cute off the richtahhh today....here's a puppy running into a mirror.

Lets Talk Bubonic Plague

Quit it with the pigs getting all the credit for Swine Flu when they don't even do anything. Heeeelllll naw. The rats bring it for reals. That's what the cheese gets for standing alone. That's what I'm talking about. Photo by MARI LIIS.

Skateboard Tetris & The Rest of San Francisco

Hey San Francisco, who made this? I know the 30-something skaters in this video must be talking about it. Who is the director & what the hell is that logo. Anyone? Is that song Metronomy? (Duh, I googled all that so this requires brain knowledge.) Anyway, this is fantastic.

Edit: Man, did I get suckered! I'm effing retiring. I'm not that into longboarding, but hey. I was all pumped that they could do that on a hill going that fast. Looks like reader Jake was on the right path, "Looks like a group of middle aged longboarders who couldn't find Burning Man." Worse. There are straps on those boards! Man! MAN!!!! Thanks to dkele for solving the mystery. RAVE TIL DAWN FREEBORDERS. Dudes. Its all fun & games & glowsticks until someone turns on the lights.

In other ramblings, SF was on the brain before I ran across that vid a bit ago. I've been there for the last couple of days. Stopped into FTC to say hello...

then kept on down the street and into the RVCA store, where Vans Collaborators Kelsey Brookes & Jay Howell had a couple of pieces up in the gallery.

To top it all off we met a guy with leather goggles, hat, and a bmw motorcycle with sidecar. Not too shabby, NorCal.

Annnnnnnd cute fog machines.

All A Virtual Penguin Wants To Do is Dance

The gist is that Disney has this world call CLUB PENGUIN where kids can create their penguin avatars. The kids design where they live & what they do including the commercials that the other penguins can watch in penguin land. If you are a virtual penguin you can watch this girl's Vans commercial in your penguin house if you traded enough penguin dough to afford a (penguin) TV.

A minute in Jakarta

Dimas Bangkit is a young kid from Jakarta, Indonesia whose interest lies in photography. I don't know what it is that I like about this Vans photo that he took. Maybe its the appeal of an inconsequential moment? I looked through some of his other photos and found myself thinking the same thing. Why do I like these? Got it! Vans Blog trip to Jakarta. Sign me up. See more of his work on BANGKITPRJKT.

Vampire Bite My Face Off (And Kanye)

There are about 6943949845 Vampire movies out or in production as well as all the TV shows and the books, the books, the books. (There's one something... I see the billboards for all over LA. Its got some girl flipped upside down with a couple of dudes flanking her, but the title didn't stick. Sorry ad man.) Why not make it topical today and throw in Kanye, if he will let me finish?

Ahem. Brooklyn illustrator MELISSA ZAYAS whipped up some Twilight Vans. Oh, Edward Cullen! You're so hot & dead. All y'all wear these while you read the books secretly in your room. (I got your number, don't I?)

Vampire-wise, Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows is pretty much the answer, though. He wrote songs. Kanye writes songs. Am I saying that Kanye is a vampire? Omg.

Your Bingo Card is Beat.

There may be argument in regard to exactly how hip/unhip the contents of this card actually are. (wtf skull purse?) However, I will admit with only slight chagrin that I have/are/own/drink/are related to all of these items with the exception of the three that you don't like the most.

What do I win? A best of Pitchfork collection and some jazz dance boots? Anyone? Thanks to DANIMAL for reducing my life to a Bingo card. But you know what? We are already over Bingo. The answer is now Operation and/or Pop-o-matic Trouble at DIRTY FRANKS. Next.

Making the Rounds NYC- Shop visit KCDC

Who doesn't love this shop? Duh, its everyone's favorite. Anyone is welcomed in KCDC. I've never gotten a hard look in this spot, and going into local shops when you're from out of town can sometimes be a little weird.

You know how you're around good people? A big crazy looking dog whose face you can grab. There's also a giant McNett death bird hanging from the ceiling. Forgot! More shop pix on VANS FLICKR.

East Coast Skate History with Mike Frazier & Rodney Smith

Alright. I deserve a WTF on not posting for a week. Holiday & vacation. Jeez. Stab me to death. However, in my travels I did get some pretty good blog fodder. How about some East Coast Skate History? First, I picked on Mike Frazier about MOUNT TRASHMORE while in Virginia Beach for ECSC.

Mt Trashmore part starts at about 2.40 in this clip from Future Primitive.

I couldn't help stopping into SHUT NYC to meet up with Rodney, Michael and crew to see what they have going on there.

Nice store on the LES...

More pix from Shut on VANS FLICKR. The east coast shop spying shall continue tomorrow.

Lil' One You're the Only One

Travis Puckett, owner of TIKI TATTOO in Lacey, Washington whipped out these customs. Since I hear he's a friend of Oliver Peck & Jeff Rassier I'm sure he's a combo best/worst guy ever. The kind of guy that will shoot fireworks at you but its funny. Thanks to MOUNTAIN MAN SHAWN for hooking up the pics.

People That You Meet When You're Walking Down the Street

Running around NYC today & met this guy on the way to KCDC. His name is Id. We had a little 'who's on first' with his name for a couple of minutes.
"Nick?"
"Id."
"Ed? It?"
"No, I-D."
"Nils?"
Had me at "Freud," finally. Glad he has a since of humor. Anyway, he had the best pair of thrashed Vans I've seen in a while so I thought I'd share a photo. I love sharing. After all, it is caring.

The Disposable Skateboard Bible Book Launch

Yeah, it might be two months after the book came out, but better late than never. Sean Cliver will be at Huf LA Thursday Sept 10th signing books & slinging free vodka all over the place. And you know its that stuff that comes in the plastic bottle with the black label and it just says 'vodka' on it. That's what gets you in trouble. Next thing you know you're out on fairfax trying to explain your life to your friend and the only thing that comes out is, "Its just that I love you...you you you know you is my boy right? Shit, arrrrrgg...that girl right there ain't call me back....hey girl!..."

More info at DISPOSABLE THE BOOK.

PS- Where have I been for the last few days? VA Beach mo fos. I'm soooo tan. Golden goddess up in here. (If by golden I mean still sickly white.) VANS.COM/ECSC OoOoOOWHeee!
