enjoi Wieger Van Wageningen Half Clog Deck

We're blushing. Look at this Half Clog Deck from enjoi. I can just imagine Vans & enjoi trotting off through the tulips past an old windmill surrounded by red heads.

Crazy for the Storm- Memoir by Norman Ollestad

On February 19, 1979 Norman Ollestad was an 11-year-old ski racer who suddenly found himself the only survivor of a plane crash in the mountains of Southern California. The crash claimed the lives of his father, his father's girlfriend, and the pilot leaving Norm alone to make his way out of the snowy range and save himself. All grown up now, Norm has written a book about the experience and his relationship with his father called, "Crazy for the Storm."

I finished the book a couple of weeks ago. I have to admit, there is no way I would have made it out of there. The stuff Norm knew from all that time skiing about how to make it through the snow storm and sketchy terrain was amazing...more so because of his age. Interesting side note, he was wearing his favorite blue Vans and talked about them a lot during the story. Here's a Norm talking about his memoir. For more info on the book visit CRAZY FOR THE STORM DOT COM.

Norm appeared on THE DAILY HABIT on Fuel TV last night, but you can catch his episode again twice today 2:30pm ET/11:30am PT and 5:30pm ET/2:30pm PT.

Party on the Spot

This...oh, this. This is exactly the kind of thing that you think is hilarious and tragically clever...so painfully clever that you post it online when you're 17. Or maybe he's serious. I choose to believe that this is a sincere musical effort because this is the kinda moxie that gets you signed to Island Def Jam and a remix with Lady GaGa and all kinds of diamonds in your grill. No it ain't.

"Yo welcome to this spot/ Come over but don't get caught/ Cause then you'll have to leave/ Kicked out by a guy named Steve/ He'll push you into the dirt/ Unless you rip his shirt/ Cause his shirt is Hollister/ It's owned by his sister/ And so she will get mad/ But invite you into my pad/ That's when the party starts/ Blow the roof off with our farts/ Gonna get musical/ Gonna be all digital/ Then we gonna get in vans/ Both the shoes and minivans/ up down to Concord Mills/ Where we are gonna chill/ Movies in the theater/ Popcorn with extra butter/"

Katy Perry's Disco Princess Custom Slip-Ons

Celeb designer & stylist, Lisa Freede, recently crafted these completely out of control Slip-Ons for Katy Perry since she's getting ready to head out on tour again this summer. Lisa hand-cut these tiny Swarovski crystals herself to turn Katy's feet into lil' disco balls.

I think these are the kind of Vans that you wear, but someone has to carry you on their shoulders. Sunshine on these joints & somebody is gonna get blinded. See more of Lisa's gorgeous jewelry and accessories line at LISA FREEDE DOT COM. (You really do want to look at her site. We can afford this. OoOoOo! Sparkles!)

Chabolla's K'Cha Custom Kicks

Katie Chabolla is only 17 & a senior in high school, but she's been running her own business for the last seven years. Customizing sneakers has been a good choice for her, and she's garnered a lot of press because of it. Why so much? Because she's got a big heart & does half of her work for kids stuck in hospitals with long-term illnesses. Straight up good kid! She's getting ready to shove off to college in the fall so buy some custom sneaks from her...or send her some recipes on how to make top ramen into other stuff (like spaghetti).

See more of Katie's work on K'CHA KICKS ON CHABOLLA DOT COM.

Dang Me! Custom Vans by Dang Studio.

This week I ran across a custom Vans paint job by David Clark of DANGSTUDIO.COM. He's an artist based out of Austin, TX and does everything from high end custom furniture, interior design, graphic design, to merchandising store fronts. Jack of all trades, eh? Its funny since of all the shoe images in the world that I could stumble upon it happens to be one by a guy who was my contact at XLR8R Magazine back in the day. Anyway, besides having his own design studio (and going to the river), David is launching a new project with his friend MASON McFEE called EUCLID MEETS CUMBERLAND. If you're in Austin this Friday, June 19th check out their show at a great little boutique called BOWS+ARROWS.

And come on... you know I gotta throw in some Roger Miller just to keep it random enough.

You're A Jerk.

Here's something you don't know about unless you live in LA or are 15. Jerkin.' I read about it in the physical Sunday LA Times. What's harder to believe...that I read an actual newspaper or that this video has been up since May 22nd & has 339,600+ views? Most jerk music is DIY (hell yeah indie rock) and the kids make it at home. They don't practice or choreograph. That shit is weak. It's all improv. They go home, cut it, & throw it on youtube.

Go Go Power Rangers from Hamilton High...

The song in this one by Vixenz Ent! is SO raunchy (but hey its pretty good)...

and New Boyz from Sierra Vista High just made this video for their song, 'You're a jerk." They recorded it themselves, but currently its getting about 60 spins per week on power 106 in LA thanks to DJ Carisma says LA times. Good story. I'm backing it.

Read about jerkin' on the LA TIMES BLOG-JERKY BOYS & GIRLS.

If You Lived Here You'd Be Home By Now.

Where is Sun Valley, Idaho? I can tell you...it is far like this------------------------------------------see how far that is? As it happens, a friend of a friend I went to visit there makes custom Vans. She's graphic designer Charlotte Hemmings, and I like her because she likes centaurs enough to paint them on shoes.

Here's a little about her.

"I started painting vans while I was at Art School in Los Angeles at Otis college of Art & Design. After graduating with a major in Fine Arts I moved to Ketchum/Sun Valley Idaho to ‘live the sweet life’ so to speak. I found myself without a means to display my fine art and that’s when/why my medium really became shoes. I have since been painting them mostly in acrylics but using paint pens for details."

If you'd like to contact Charlotte & see more of her work look at CHARLOTTES KICKS BLOG.

Sometimes I'm Jealous.

Bryan Derballa relaunched his site today. It's slam full of photos from places you need to get your lazy ass up & go to - along with things you should be doing (again, if you weren't so lazy). That's the burden that good photographers have to bear, I reckon. People gonna hate you because not only do you visit South America, end up sleeping in a field, and wake up judging a beauty contest of ten-year-olds, but you have proof of how amazing it was. You'll have to go to his site to see those photos. For now, party at the Autumn Bowl & some dudes in Rhode Island. LOVEBRYAN.COM

PS...look in the news items on Bryan's site & you'll see the link to download DJ Equal's "Kick Push Play," a mix from 90s skate videos. Bryan's work appears all over the place, but I always remember to look at it on FECAL FACE.

Tomato & Orange VS Half Cab

Fruit doesn't stand a chance in these DIY commercials. This ain't even a fair fight. Wasting, I say! In this economy? For shame, good sir. On the food tip, though. You know what would be real nasty? If he had 'em stepping in a big pile of meat.

The USS Texas Submarine Crew Rocks Vans

A recent LA Times story, "Vans shoes: a happily checkered past" prompted people to write to journalist Adam Tschorn. Here's an except from follow up LA Times Blog post- "Readers share 'Vanecdotes' about that checkerboard slip-on"- a letter from Steve Coe...

"I heard a great story from my friend who directed [Discovery Channel's] "Future Weapons." He had to film on the USS Texas submarine...all of the guys on the submarine were wearing checkered Vans. It turns out they can choose their own footwear on subs -- it's the only part that's non-uniform and they all pick the same shoes to wear. ... According to John, they are the perfect sub shoe because they are comfortable and quiet and sonar can pick up shoe noises.""

I couldn't find a photo of the current crew wearing checkerboard Slip-Ons, but I did find the above photo of the 2006 USS Texas crew wearing grey Authentics via Slagheap's flickr. See the episode of Discovery Channel's Future Weapons - USS TEXAS (SSN 775) here. Apparently, it has rubber floors & the whole sub is coated in rubber...thus making it super lurker.

As an added bonus I found a Navy guy freestyling about the USS Texas, "''Cause little homie this is the Navaaay/Surface ain't got shit but us submariners are crazaaay..."

Two Reasons I Like Decatur, Georgia.

Decatur, Georgia illustrator & designer Tony Price creates custom Vans using a combination of pencil, ink, paint markers and Sharpies. Each pair is for a specific person based on ideas they give him. He ain't into ready-made. Come up with an idea for what you'd like to do and contact him. I'd put Tony in the top 5 best non-professional customs designers I've come across. You can see more of his work at TONYXPRICE.COM. Those owl jawns are right up my alley.

You know what else the fair city of Decatur gave us? Effin' Jan Hooks, ya heard?!! "There are thousands and thousands of uses for corn, all of which I will tell you about right now..."

Ehren Bienert's Steve Cab Sculpture

Ehren Bienert recently finished this commission for Steve Caballero. Here's what the artist has to say about it via VANS.COM messageboards.

'My previous sculpture of Jamie Thomas led directly to this. I had posted pics of the JT sculpt on a few sites and Steve Caballero saw it. He decided to commission me to sculpt him. He provided me with the famous photo of himself pulling off a sweet frontside invert at the Winchester park. The photo was taken by Ted Terrebonne. I started working on it in September of '08. Unfortunately due to my day job, buying a house, and moving, it took me until March of '09 to finish it.'
