Custom Vans by Larimie Garcia

Larimie Garcia is an artist living in San Francisco. He had a miscalculated love affair that ultimately inspired the artwork on his Vans. C'est la vie! Och! Aye! Maybe we all imagine biting off the heads of our exes, too. Or maybe we're the dead deer and the exes are the wolves.

Goodbye Young Ones You Were Great.

Noah Love recently had to part ways with his old Vans. However, he documented their departure from his life with this lovely memorial.

Fare thee well, friends! (I'd wave a hankie & cry a single tear.) See more of Noah's design & photography on LURKER INSENTIVE or his blog OH DEAR.

Chris Nieratko Invented the Half Cab

Author, skate shop owner, and man, Chris Nieratko was recently interviewed by ITS BONGO BOY DOT COM. As it happens, Nieratko not only invented the Half Cab, but he also invented street wear that you can wear well as inside. via @BOARDISTAN & @SKATEBOARDMAG

A Flying V, a Shopping Cart and a Reatard

Jay Reatard is about to kick off his NORTH AMERICAN TOUR in June. You should get tickets so you can go to the show before his new album drops on Matador and he gets all big but not blown out and you can say, "Oh, yeah. I've been into Jay Reatard forever. I saw him at Johnny Brenda's and gave him a beer. We are facebook friends." And you thought I was going to say something wildly inappropriate in this post and you'd get to berate me for misspelling retard.

Vans Mail Bag: 8th Grade Dance Photo

Got this via pony express today.

To Whoever This May Concern:

Hi, my name is A.J. Arnold. I live in Phoenix, Arizona, and attend Arizona State University. I have a few little brothers and one of them is just graduating from middle school. This past week was the 8th grade "Promotional Dance". It is a formal so it's nice to see the kids get dressed up and even some have dates! Anyway, the eight boy clique decided to each pick a vans classic color and dressed accordingly..."

A.J. Arnold

You know these kids had a dance routine worked out. I know in my heart that this is what happened at their dance...

Carbon Fiber Vans Customs by Hush Fabrications

You wouldn't even know these are actually custom made Vans. Hush, a sneaker customizer of few words from Shrewsbury, MA, added carbon fiber accents to this pair of red Half Cabs he completed earlier this year. Basically, his deal is to take a stock pair of kicks and hand-stitch them so well that they appear better than the real thing. I don't know much about Hush, but he's done a couple of interesting partnerships including a collab with RIVAL NYC. Hush doesn't appear to have an up to date blog or site, but he has sent photos out of his latest work to a couple of sneaker blogs. I'm keeping up with this guy. For now, though, you'll have to google him & see where HUSH FABRICATIONS pops up.

Architecture & Skateboarding: Milan's Bastard Store

Comvert Headquarters in Milan is an absolute dream. A design space and distribution warehouse for Comvert and retail space for the Bastard flagship store, this former theatre built in 1940 is now home to an inspiring structure at which to punch a time card everyday. And, man. Look at that suspended bowl...6 meters up. Photos by Giuliano Berarducci & studiometrico (the firm that built this thing.)

Here's a shot of the space in 1940.

Side view of Comvert HQ floor plan.

For more fantastic in-depth photos of the architectural plans for the whole project look at ARCH DAILY. If you want to see more specs and nerd out try ARCHINFO.IT.

Here's one of the few vids I could find of the bowl that didn't have the embed code disabled. Why do people do that? Seriously. If you don't want people sharing your video then don't put it online. Gah. Ok, crotchety rant over. Here's the vid.

Check out the BASTARD BLOG. Good stuff on there, too. Links via @boingboing

Skateboard: The Movie (1978)

Tony Alva starred opposite Leif Garrett in this movie about a gambler who was out of cash & hoping to become rich again (pay off his bookie) by starting his own skate team. I think in the 70s, you could only write a film about being a gambler, a truck driver, or a detective.

Here's the safety film that was shown after the feature. You don't want anyone getting any kooky ideas from a movie...

Who is Leif Garrett? He was hot shit back in the day before the quaaludes and the reality shows. Fun fact: he scores points for touring with The Melvins in the '90s.

(Oh my god. I just realized that I look like Leif Garrett in this video. I guess I should face it & embrace it.)

Isaiah vs Connor: Kids Battle to the Death

Aight. Connor & Isaiah made a video to find out who has the best shoes. Connor pits his Nikes against Isaiah's Vans. This is a straight forward gentleman's contest between the two.

And you know what Nike? 6.0 where you at? I'm 'a man up. If Isaiah wins, he gets a free pair of Vans. What about you? OoooooOoooHHHH! Challenge. Anyone at Nike want to back Connor? Votes are at zero right now. Yeaaaaah! Vote for Isaiah on their youtube page. Let's check back with their votes on June 1, 2009.

Cobra Dogs: The Man Behind the Weenies

Cory Grove (that's CORY not COREY) is the owner of Cobra Dogs. What is a Cobra Dog? A jewel & diamond encrusted hot dog on a golden bun with weird sauce that every local in the Pacific Northwest snowboarding scene knows about because them dogs is awessssssome. However, going back to the aforementioned "jewel encrusted hot dog." Well, that may not be true since you'd choke/break your teeth out on a silly food such as that instead of having a good, nice Cobra Dog. Anyway, Cory's got an interview on with Brooke on Yo Beat where he expounds upon Hamthrax, bikes, Aaron Draplin, MANdex (not spandex) and why it seems like snowboarders can't dress themselves. Get yourself informed. LEARN ABOUT SOME COBRA DOGS ON YOBEAT.

Weird Al Has More Vans Than You have Accordions.

Shauna from SLIP OFFS sent me this link this morning with Weird Al all up on CNN Money with his Vans Collection around him. As it happens he's got more than one hundred pairs. He was featured as part of an article on BRAND OBSESSIONS.

But do you know what's crazy? I mean, like, whooooaaa! Not only do I work for Weird Al's favorite sneaker company, but one of the accordion shops he goes to, Dave's, is in my hood. Jared E. posted this photo of them on his flickr. See the arrows? That's a real-life Weird Al autograph. So basically, Weird Al is my best friend.

Sneaky News: Vans Welcomes New Rider to Skate Team

This young up & coming brazilian has been killing it. We are so stoked to have him. He's an effin' animal.

Note: Stinking youtube and their dumb taking down videos. It was the skate chimp on a Vans ramp. (Imaginaaaaation time.) I mailed google/youtube 2 bags of dookie. Anyway, a long time ago Dave Carnie interviewed Louie the skateboarding chimp & put it in Big Brother. It's a good story & he posted on JACKASS WORLD last year so have a look at that instead.

Photo of the Week: Vans Off The Waffle

This one comes from one of VANS' FLICKR contacts. The photographer, Robin, is from Trelleborg, Sweden and has a penchant for portraiture. His photostream doesn't have thousands of photos, but he is definitely about quality over quantity. Have a gander at ROBINROOS FLICKR if you want to get nostalgic for skating and running around in Sweden even if you've never been.
